Nowadays, I try to consider all my options.Īs it is, I'm still learning and can miss something till later, but I'm no longer forgeting obvious ways out. I used to curse myself for dieing, then realizing I had a couple of teleport scrolls or healing potions in my backpack. If you analyze all your options, you can usually find a way out. Most times, things that can potentially insta-kill your character without you doing something about it are rare. At the same time, however, I've found that you die in stupid, careless situations a whole lot less. You reach a sort of 'oh-well, shit happens' kind of zen state. That's what amulets of life are for, although they tend to be a bitch to find, since any monster that spawns with them will use it and just come back to life on you, destorying the amulet.Īlthough I didn't use to be very hardcore either, after playing online for a while, I've found it to actually be less stressful. When you can get killed in a single attack even if you have the maximum possible hitpoints, it's not worth my time to play without a save. still up on sourceforge here though -Īnyway, Nethack might have to be my next fix after I get tired of X-Com this time around. I remember making a laser could zap monsters and had a recharging energy barĪfter some cursory searching, it appears to have died a few years ago. the game's language was so versatile that you could do things such as create your own weapons. some some incredible feats of ascii/ansi magic done with that program, including loader-type things with music/video. ever see Megazeux? it was an incredible evolution over ZZT, with mod/real sound support, user-editable ascii palettes (and even the ansi color palette could be modified, iirc), far richer language, etc. I played that on my 8088 back in the bbs heydays. Now that brought back some old school memories. It was called Z-something.not Zmud or Z, but I know what the first letter was.Ĭool thing about this game was that you could build your own levels (in gorgeous 16 color ASCII art) and script your own NPCs with a cool in-game scripting language. It's lovely ASCII face reminds me of another game I played when just a wee one. Should anyone find that bone file (easily identified by Stampy the Mammoth and Frostbite the Winter Wolf) I've got a +6 quarterstaff, the +2 boots of speed, and about 2 dozen valuble gems. sick'em Stampy! Sweet! Look at all this cool loot! Oh no, I'm overburdened, just fought off a bunch of things, and am being hit multiple times by a soldier ant, no worries, I'll just *ch. Sweet! Boots of Speed +2, and a magic whistle! Get to Minetown, Sweet! Coaligned alter! Get to bottom, ack, vampire tomb. So, I'm a wizard, look at my starting spells - sweet! I got charm monster as my secondary! Go into the dungeon, run into a Mammoth *charm* I'll call you Stampy! Go further into dungeon. Also leads to the occasional multi-bone level, where someone died in some horrendus manner, which then proceeds to kill the next couple of people who get it too.ģ) You're forced to play legitimately, so you can't backup your character, thus making ascending all that much sweeter.Īnyway, with that out of the way, I go on to include my rant, which was why I started this post in the first place. Much cooler then encountering your own ghost over and over. This is cooler than just playing locally for several reasons:ġ) Your scores are ranked agienst the rest of the Ars community.Ģ) You can encounter bone files from any other player.

This is also known as me wanting to encounter more bones files.įor those who don't know about it/have forgotten it, you can go to the Ars Nethack Server to find out more.īasically, it's an online nethack server, with an attached database.

Hey people, it's been a long while since the old Ars Nethack post went up.
